I teach 26 enthusiastic Kindergarten students. It is the first classroom experience for many of my students. My students are at an age where art, movement, and dramatic play are the most meaningful and exciting times of the day. I use these times to reinforce many concepts each day. My students come from many different cultural backgrounds. Some of my students are from low-income families who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, some have special needs and have an Individualized Education Plan, and others are second language learners. This diverse group of learners needs hands-on experiences to express learning through fine motor development, personal development, and imagination.
My Project
My students will be able to engineer happier endings to the fairy tales that we listen to in class. For example, they might design a house that can’t be blown down, construct a bridge that keeps 3 goats safe from the troll, or build a chair even Goldilocks can’t break!
The STEM-focused kits will give my students the opportunity to explore each challenging situation with hands-on materials until they find a solution for the fairy tale characters.
My students will discover new endings or better outcomes for their favorite fairy tales.
After reading the story, the students will be encouraged to use the building materials to create a new chair for Baby Bear. These hands-on experiences will encourage cooperative learning opportunities and team building opportunities.
More than half of students from low‑income households
