My Project
Our small school is just like family! Students remain in the same class together from kindergarten (and some from PreK!) through 6th grade, when they graduate from our school - this can be a huge strength for them, as their class can become an incredibly strong, lifelong system of support and friendship. My role as a grade 4 teacher, beyond supporting their academic growth, is to support these students in doing just that!
The items I've selected for this project will support my students in strengthening their sense of belonging to our class (especially for any new students who need to navigate being new in a class where students have been together for at least 4 years), developing communication and collaboration skills, and further creating our class as a cozy environment where they feel safe and feel like they belong.
The team bucket challenge and parachutes will be used throughout the year in team building activities where students will need to communicate effectively and kindly, as well as work together to accomplish a common goal. These activities will help to build students' sense of belonging and "team-ness" in fun ways, creating lasting memories and opportunities to learn something new about one another. The reading bench will create a cozy space in our reading area, inviting students to sit together while reading. Talking together about a book is one way to build camaraderie through learning about each other's interests and practicing listening and responding to each other's ideas and thoughts. Finally, having the highlighter strips and pencil sharpener will fulfill some basic supply needs in our classroom so that we can focus on the more important things, such as strengthening our sense of belonging, communication and collaboration skills, and on learning.
