We are Different and the Same. Our Stories Prove It.

My students need a variety of mythology texts that include stories from around the world in addition to the Classical Greek myths many students are already familiar with.

My Students

"What was the mythology project you did last year? Can we do that too?" and "Can we have a debate?!" These are questions my students ask me near the beginning of each school year.

Our students are artists who create and perform as a way of life.

They thrive on projects that allow them to explore, create, expand and display their knowledge in non-traditional ways. With great diversity in socioeconomic background, culture, and life experiences, our students' greatest commonality is a desire to thrive in the arts.

As a top-rated school in the nation, we seek to challenge our students academically and artistically in both arts and academic classes, creating en environment that nurtures and pushes them to achieve at levels that regularly see them accepted to Julliard, NYU, CSUs, UCs, CalArts, and a variety of other top post-secondary experiences for both arts and academics.

My Project

Shiva, Ganesha, Baba Yaga, and the Kappa, these and so many other mythological characters and creatures are missing from the typical study of mythology. Everyone knows about Hercules and the modern day mythology of the Percy Jackson series. How many of our students know that there are myths across the world, that each culture has its own series of stories that are rich, interesting, and tell us so much about the cultural values? These books on world mythology will open my students minds to the world of mythology beyond the classical Greek and Roman heroes and monsters. Texts that include literature from around the world will help students see the similarities and differences in our ancestors. They will learn to understand and explain what a story shows about the values of the culture it belongs to and how our current stories tell the world about our values.

Students will learn to analyze patterns and messages and to create their own cultural stories in sophisticated and appealing writing, supported by the base that these texts create and lifted by the class discussions and activities inspired by them.
