My Students

"Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world" - Nelson Mandela My AVID students are learning the academic and behavioral skills essential for college success. They need supplies such as pencils, paper and pens to keep them organized. They also need easels for group work.

My students are in grades 6-8 in an inner city school plagued with poverty.

In fact, 100% of students in our K-8 school qualify for free and reduced lunch. In addition, our school has the highest English Language Learner population in the state and many students receive special education services. This year, we began the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program in the middle school. AVID is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other post secondary opportunities. Despite the obstacles that they face in their lives, my students come to school determined to succeed. They are actively engaged in their learning and practice strategies to help enhance their writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading skills. All of the students in my AVID elective class have the desire to pursue their dreams as first generation college students.

My Project

Organization is a critical component of academic success. AVID students are expected to maintain a two inch binder (or larger) organized in "The AVID Way." Students keep all of their notes and handouts for each class in their AVID binders. The supplies that I am requesting are critical for students organization. These supplies include three hole punches, pencils, pens and filler paper and pencil pouches. As students need to replenish their supplies throughout the year, they will be available through this donation. A giant wall calendar will be used to keep track of important dates. Students also need presentation easels and chart paper to participate in the AVID tutorial sessions. Tutorials are also a primary component contributing to the success of AVID students. Based on the Socratic method, tutorials are an exercise in higher level thinking and questioning. College students facilitate the tutorials so that they operate in much the same manner as cooperative college study groups.

Often times, my students do not have access to the basic supplies that they need in order to be successful in school.

This donation will help to ensure that all students have what they need for the AVID binders and tutorial sessions. Organized students, are confident students. Having the tools that they need will greatly enhance my students learning and put them on the path of college readiness.
