My Students
Do you remember what it was like to really, really, really want to read a particular book? My students are clamoring to read One Crazy Summer, by Rita Williams-Garcia.
My students are a vibrant group of fifth graders who are passionate about life.
They attend a public charter in the most struggling community in our state. Our public library was closed, and has reopened with volunteers. Access to books is a major equity issue for my students.
My Project
One of my main goals is to help my students to become lifelong learners by developing strong reading habits. My mission is to connect them with powerful books that will introduce them to new worlds, new authors, and new ideas. Having individual copies of this book will allow my class to enjoy a shared experience around a book that they have chosen to read together.
Your donation will allow my students to engage in a shared reading experience of their own choosing.
They will be empowered through literacy, and learn that they can advocate for themselves in the face of adversity --- library closing, budget cuts, city bankruptcy --- by reading books that they want to read.
