Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We talk a lot about diversity but we still segregate ourselves into fairly homogeneous communities. Because of this, teaching our students to accept differences may require that we seek out activities that are out of their community. Activities that allow them to explore, learn and value diversity.

My students are first graders attending a school located in a low socioeconomic area in Los Angeles.

They are in a dual language class in which they are learning two languages at the same time. There are 15 boys and 7 girls between the ages of 6 and 7. My students are full of energy and are eager to learn new concepts every day even though a lot of times, because of economic hardship, their parents have two jobs to be able to support their family. Many parents are lacking time to spend with children and talk to them about the importance of education.

My Project

Today we remember a great man, Martin Luther King, Jr. His goal was to encourage people to accept each other. He had a dream that all people would treat each other as equals. We can see his dream come alive at Disneyland. In this class trip my students will be able to see people from all over the world firsthand. They will be able to see reenactments and realia from around the world. They will be able to hear announcements in English, Spanish, and Japanese. As well as listen to people speaking in Chinese and French. People with accents from England and Australia along with languages and accents from many other countries as well. With this class trip my students will be able to learn about the different clothing, accents and notice the cultural differences of people. They will learn about frontier life in the Wild West, see a glimpse of New Orleans and of the entire world in a day's time. People from all colors, creeds and religions all coming together simply to enjoy a day of fun.

This class trip will be the chance of a lifetime to teach my students that diversity is not something to be feared and that we are all "brothers".

No matter what religion, color or creed we all need love, care for our family and can feel joy. Please help teach my students that learning about diversity and the world's cultures is not something you can only do within the four walls of the classroom but something you can explore everywhere you go.
