Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I spend all day everyday with middle schoolers (most of them teenagers) who dislike reading. Most of them struggle with being successful. I am challenged each day with creating an environment that is a welcoming and safe place for them to learn.

My school in an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse rural middle school.

Many are raised by a single parent or grandparent. Many of our students will never experience life outside of our county. For some of our students, school is the best part of their day. School provides them with hot meals, structure and people who consistently care about them.

My Project

My students will use the posters, DVD and curriculum guide to explore life out side of their comfort zone. We will examine how other people on our planet live and make comparisons to our lives. In many instances, we will realize the opportunities that we are given in the United States far exceed those of other regions. My goal is to help my students recognize that with hard work and effort they make a successful life for themselves. Once the poster activities are complete, I will tie in reading passages, both fiction and non-fiction, from the regions that we have studied. Reading passages and excerpts from the countries we study will bring a sense of reality to their reading passages. The posters and discussion will provide much needed background information for the passages thus scaffolding their reading skills and setting them up for success.

Unfortunately some students do not see the need for honing their reading skills.

Even more do not value hard work and the importance of education. My hopes are to instill in them the drive to become better; the need to put forth the effort to move our country in a forward direction; the realization that people in developing countries do not always have the same opportunities and they should take advantage of the chances they are given.
