My Students

How can you study the night sky during the day? Where is there an endless supply of math practice problems? Where can students use their knowledge and creativity to make movies? How can students become experts at using the 21st century tools they will need in the future? They can learn on an iPad.

My students come from a vibrant, diverse community.

I have an inquisitive group of 6th graders in a self-contained classroom. I notice increased motivation when students get to use the 3 computers in our classroom. Some of my students do not have access to technology at home. All of my students need to learn how technology can be used for learning and productivity rather than just as entertainment. My students also have a wide range of educational needs. There are advanced students, English language learners, and special education students all in one room! It can be difficult to meet the needs of everyone. Hands-on technology like iPads would give me a 21st century tool that students could use for different needs.

My Project

iPads will be very useful in learning literacy. E-reading apps are free, and many books are free. Some e-books are interactive. Students can check their understanding as they read. Many e-readers will also give dictionary definitions for words students do not know, and some play a recording of how the word is pronounced. Students can use iLife programs to create responses to their reading. Garage Band can help them produce podcasts about what they have learned, put on radio plays, or create songs based on their reading. iMovie can be used for students to give a multimedia presentation of their understandings. iPads are a very engaging way for students to get the practice they need in math. iPads can run spreadsheet software; this is a tool for using data. Sixth grade students study astronomy. There is a great app that brings the night sky to your fingertips. Students can also use iPads to do research on the Internet. Google translate is also a helpful tool for ELL students.

I have a masters degree in instructional technology.

I have studied many ways that technology can be used in the classroom. I think it is most powerful when students are taught how to use technology in a hands-on environment. Rotating 3 aging, out-of-date computers between 21 students is not practical. It is very important that we don't let budget cuts keep children in less affluent areas out of the 21st century!
