This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students have very vague ideas about where they come from. When we discuss traditions and customs in their families, they are stumped. Many of them just haven't had the opportunity to talk with their families about their past. Here is where this unit comes in.

My classroom is a buzz of activity, focused on giving kids the opportunities that they may not get elsewhere.

My 5th grade class is in a high-need, low income public school, nestled in the heart of southern California. Each of the students in my class is a vibrant, excited learner, who looks for the next opportunity to gain knowledge.

My Project

Each one of my students has a story to tell about their heritage and with the requested materials, I will help them bring it out! Through a 6-week long unit on Heritage, the students will be conducting family interviews, creating family trees, documenting family histories, and sharing these with our class. We will be learning about different customs and traditions the world over, focusing specifically on our own unique family histories. Using the binders, we will be creating albums to document the stories of our lives. With the literature requested, we will be reading about the lives and cultures of other children around the world. We also will be making these stories come to life using the puppets, which will also serve as models of various clothing of other cultures.

By learning about the past, and documenting it for their futures, the students will be gaining a lesson in family that will last a lifetime.

You will help to ensure that all of my students gain an understanding of their family, a connection to their past, and a lead into their future.
