Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students in my 8th grade class will be able to explore the concept of energy in "waves" with the materials donated. They will be able to "see" waves of energy. Students will learn about transverse and longitudinal waves using the super slinky and the helical spring (wave demonstrator. They will continue their exploration of frequency by building various models using the wave sticks - they will see that frequency affects amplitude. Students will explore sound waves using the demonstration buzzer to hear the Doppler effect. They will relate this to their life as they journal their listening during a two day period of instances they've heard during their day, of the Doppler effect. Students will use tuning forks to observe sound waves as they listen and "feel" the energy moving in the sound. These materials will be reused year after year by middle graders as well as lower grades, to further their grasp of energy and waves. They will see why this is relevant to their lives. Students learn best by doing; and these abstract concepts are best learned by doing.
