Help me give my students their right to checkout books again, by allowing us to purchase these UV sanitizing wands. These wands can help in sanitizing books when they are checked back into the library.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is in a low income area where 99% of the school receives free or reduced-price lunch. There are approximately 800 students from Pre-K to 4th grade with 75% of them as English as their second language. The students come from backgrounds where money is not readily available and they depend on the school for survival. Most of the kids only get a meal when they come to school.
With covid-19 we are now having to become creative to make sure our students still receive the same quality education as anyone else in an area that can afford the necessities.
Our students were issued devices by the district so that they can continue their learning online, which has helped grow our students. Although we have guided them to read the e-books online, we also want to nurture the love of reading a physically book.
My Project
With covid-19, we had to put a hold on checking out books because with the amount of students we have at school, we would not be able to meet the demand of book requests. The proper wait time for sanitizing or allowing books to be in a quarantine state is 10-14 days. With a population of 700 or more, the students would be waiting two weeks at a time for their favorite title! With this UV wand, we can decrease the wait time down to 2-3 hours! Once books have been sanitized by the wand, then we can allow them to be checked back out to another student.
