Watercolor Supplies: Paint and Brushes

My students need 35 sets of watercolor paints and brushes.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. PRIMOSCH's classroom raised $249

This project is fully funded

Our school is located in a poverty stricken area in New York and is the educational home to students from grades PK-6, where I am the art teacher. Despite the challenges of growing up in the projects, our students stand out as spectacular young citizens who achieve. Our school was recently awarded an "A" by the Mayor and Chancellor, and was selected as a model school for the empowerment zone. In the art program for this school, I am striving to make available to all of my students art experience involving watercolor paint.

The achievement of our students can be attributed to the devotion of the teachers, staff and community at large. We have a very strong arts commitment, and our students' work has been published, and our musicians have played at venues such as Carnegie Hall. What our students lack in economic status, they make up for in dedication and perseverance. Providing us with art materials will enable us to continue in our commitment to our students' personal achievement. Your help will be felt for generations, as the arts will support our students' personal growth, which will in turn inspire them to lead others as citizens. A common question I hear from my students is, "When do we get to paint?" Another is, "How do you make orange/green/purple?". Also, when drawing their own depiction of an artist, they often automatically draw a person painting, rather than coloring. However, so many of our students have had limited or no experience using paint or brushes.

In order to make the students' wish to paint come true, we need an entire set of watercolor paint and brushes sufficient for a whole class. I will be teaching approximately 500 students per week, and this one set will serve the whole school. All grades from Pre-K up to 6th grade will be using these supplies, ensuring that every developmental stage will have experience with this media.

With your help, you will provide these students, who so often are unfairly barred from sophisticated art materials and experiences due to their families' socioeconomic status, with the ability to explore the infinity of art possibilities that watercolors present. You will have an effect on these young people's understanding of the world when they realize that they themselves have created orange by mixing red and yellow, or pink by adding more water to the red. It will be you who has had a hand in turning the fate of a child's life, thanks to their exposure to the arts, and the possibilities of creation the arts bring. Please stand up for the disempowered child, and allow him/her to have access to the same artistic interactions that is automatically afforded to the privileged. With your help, you will have supported the creation of a whole person, one who is a future citizen of the United States of America.
