My Project
There is no doubt that the pandemic has taken a toll on our students. Statistics show just how much student well-being has been affected. The CDC has reported that mental health related ER visits have increased over 24% in kids aged 5-11 alone. SEL is important now more than ever because it helps our students heal and grow in their mental wellness. SEL is about helping our students learn to cope and deal with stress and worries by creating a safe learning environment for kids to show their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
With this in mind, I would like to use art as part of my SEL class program, namely watercolor painting, to help my students express themselves in a creative way with watercolor paper, watercolor pans, brushes, and paint trays.
Painting allows students to relax. When students create something beautiful, their minds are relieved of mental stress.
