My students need a water testing kit to monitor a near by stream and submit the results to Alabama Water Watch.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Murphy's classroom raised $607

Save the streams of Alabama. I teach Environmental Education (the only class for middle school in our school system). Our school is Title I with 90% of the students receiving free lunch. My goal is to teach the students that they will be the next stewards of our planet and one way of doing that is to monitor the water in our area.
Some of my students worked with the staff from Auburn University and qualified to test the chemical content of water. They are interested in anything to do with the environment and the results of their testing will be compared to other streams throughout the state.
Students will do a comparative study of water from a variety of sources in our city to determine the relative health of the watercourse at a particular site as an ongoing project for the school year. Students will learn through discovery and analysis how human activities can negatively and positively affect water quality.
Students will be able to correctly collect water samples from various sources.
With a water testing kit, they will be able to use proper laboratory procedures to test water samples for dissolved oxygen, nitrates, pH, carbonates, and turbidity.
From data collected, students will be able to draw conclusions regarding water quality and human activities. The students will be part of the Alabama Water Watch (AWW) and which teaches students about water issues in Alabama and the world. It promotes citizen volunteer water monitoring and personal involvement in watershed stewardship through environmental education, protection and restoration, and advocacy.
Water takes away, but also leaves behind; it depletes, but also restores. Water related issues are important and studying our streams will help prepare learners for citizenship for the next generation.
