Water Exploration

My Students

I have 7 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime​ to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.

My Project

My students have a lot of sensory needs that they need met throughout the day. Some sensory activities are very messy and hard to play with in the classroom. My school has a greenhouse that we are able to use for water exploration.

Water is very calming and meets the sensory needs that my students with autism have.

In order to utilize the greenhouse space for water exploration we need a water table that can easily be drained and moved. This water table is perfect for our space and would allow my students to have consistent water play throughout the week.

While playing in the water students can also work on fine motor and basic pre-academic skills. The water sensory area will be used as often as students need and they will be able to play with a variety of water toys and activities. I’m excited to see my students learn and grow in a space that is perfect for water exploration.
