Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are predominantly from working-class immigrant families and communities. The majority of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and are first-generation college students. My students and their families are goal-oriented and seek to enroll in college after graduating from high school. The vast majority of my students lack research skills, as they simply use search engines like Google and then select the first link available. In order to be successful in college, my students will need to learn how to use databases to search for information, find books and articles in the library, utilize high quality, reliable online search tools, and evaluate whether the information they find is reliable, recent, and relevant. These skills are essential for college success, and I would argue, career success and civic engagement.
My Project
My advisory students do not have water bottles to bring to school. Students are transitioning from online learning to in-person learning. Students express how they miss being able to drink water (or eat snacks) whenever they want. Also, students tell me they feel tired, have headaches, and experience dehydration throughout the day. All of my students and their families qualify for the federal free lunch program.
Help me provide my students with a reusable water bottle that they can claim as their own.
Students will be able to decorate and personalize their own water bottle. These water bottles will support students in taking care of themselves throughout the day. By hydrating their bodies, students will be more focused, energetic, and engaged. Also students will continue to transition from online learning to in-person learning as they will be able to have water with them at all times.
