This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our math classroom believes in innovative and engaging hands-on learning experiences for all students. In our current math unit, we are learning about recognizing and representing real-life ratios and unit rates by building their very own water-bottle race cars!

This project offers students a unique opportunity to apply concepts from their math, science, and creativity classrooms through constructing and testing water bottle race cars!

The materials I am requesting will help students construct their cars with hot glue sticks and wheels/axels, practice measuring time with their calculators, practice calculating speed with their calculators, and connect principles of gravity to math, making learning fun and engaging!

This group project encourages creativity and innovation because students are not only tasked with assembling the cars, but also with designing them for optimal performance. My students love using imagination, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think outside the box! This project also requires collaboration among student groups to design, build, and test their race cars. These transferable skills of teamwork, communication, and division of labor help students to grow into well-rounded individuals.

In student groups, they will work together demonstrating practical applications of Unit Rates and Percentages through recording, observing, and analyzing data points collected through their test runs. By connecting our math concepts to the real-world, students will deepen their appreciation for the importance of math! Supporting our students allows not just for students to enjoy a fun project, but also to bring an inclusive educational environment that equips our students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed outside of school.
