Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Although I have a biased opinion, I can say that my class has six of the greatest students in Massachusetts. My students are between the ages of three and five years old and speak Spanish as their first language. They also have been diagnosed with severe and moderate disabilities. Two of my students have multiple disabilities. Despite their challenges however, my kids are full of life, energy, and excitement. They come to the classroom with a passion and enthusiasm to learn. Our curriculum, Opening the World of Learning (or OWL), aims to present our students with center based learning areas for them to acquire new vocabulary in English and while at the same time using hands on experiences to learn new concepts. These centers encourage the students to express themselves verbally, artistically, and in traditionally academic form.

Our wonderful school community is located in a low income area in an urban district. Parents and teachers have done their best to pool and stretch our resources to make our classroom a successful learning environment however we still do not have all the supplies we need. Out of all of the centers, my students love the water and sand table. The water table is designed to develop students' fine and gross motor skills while at the same time providing them with opportunities to learn words such as fill, empty, squeeze, funnel, narrow, inside, outside, etc. in a hands on activity. Students use simple tools and explore sand and water. Each week new tools and new vocabulary are introduced so that my students who are just learning English can learn new words through hands on learning activities. All the other classrooms in our school with students without disabilities have water and sand tables that were provided by the district. Unfortunately however since our classroom is under the department of Special Education, one was not provided for us. I still feel that it's important for my students to have so our water and sand table is a plastic bin from Target. We place it on the floor now because

We want our students to interact with water and sand play, we just need another alternative that accommodate more children and can keep them as dry as possible. We would greatly appreciate a water/sand table for our classroom home. With it, more students can enjoy the water and sand learning center and have an opportunity to learn new vocabulary through play.

This is your opportunity to show my students you care about their education and the quality of their resources in their classroom. You will make it possible for them to have a better learning environment.
