My students need twelve keyboards and five computer mice to replace their computer equipment that was ruined in a flood, in our computer lab.
I work at a wonderful school, in an urban school district.
While we don't have the newest computer equipment, we did have a computer lab that my students were very proud of. Over the course of a day, I have over one hundred and fifty students use my computer lab. Some students are in my Foundations of Technology and Graphic Design classes, and some are students who don't have access to a computer or printer at home. I have always taken it for granted that most people have a computer and access to the Internet, but that isn't the case for all of my students. During my free period and lunch period, my computer lab is full of students writing papers, applying for jobs, and most importantly applying for college, and filling out financial aid forms. These are all things they can't do without a computer at home. Even though our computers and keyboards aren't the newest, my students take great care of "our computers," to keep the lab nice for themselves and future students.
My Project
Our school is housed in a very old building, and last October a pipe burst in the room above the computer lab, and flooded the lab. By the time the teachers arrived in the morning, we had to wade through four inches of water to save whatever equipment we could. We were lucky enough to only loose twelve keyboards and the computer mice. Right now, the students are using equipment we have scavenged from closets and other places in the school, that don't always work properly.
