Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you believe we have students on our campus who volunteer to read---for fun??? We participate in a yearly competition sponsored by our school district. The students read a variety of different books and then compete to answer questions about the stories.

Our students are a bright, precocious bunch!

Most of them come from homes in a low-income demographic. We have over 90% of our students that qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many families speak and read in Spanish at home. They absolutely LOVE to read and beg to take books home with them. The more they read, the better readers they become.

My Project

Every year we do a book club for our younger kiddos. The children stay after school one day every week and we read stories aloud and discuss the plots and characters of the books. The students share their opinions of the books and write little reviews of their own about the story. They are also allowed to check the books out and read them at home. We need to have these books in order to continue our book club for next year. With budgets being cut left and right, we don't have the money for the 70 books on our book lists. I can buy some of them, but frankly, just cannot afford to purchase all those books on top of the money I generally spend on my kiddos.

Your donation of 31 books would allow our students to continue on the tradition of our campus book club.

They will have access to quality titles, on their level, that they can take home and share with their families. You will give them the opportunity to learn about famous people like Louisa May Alcott and Mark Twain, go on adventures with a big chicken, Stellaluna, Ling and Ting, Duck Duck Moose, and Stink, not to mention inspire them in their passion for reading. Your donation would be an incredible learning opportunity for our kiddos!
