My Students

Our dance room is filled with inspirational quotes and pictures of dancers from all dance styles. Our goal this year is to use the dance technique and performance skills we have learned to create high energy, complex and uplifting performances. My students enjoy learning dance styles that are new to them. My students range from grades kindergarten to eighth grade.

Students love to share their talents with family and friends at our annual Winter Fine Arts Recital and Spring Production.

Our school is located in an urban community where 92% of our students come from a low-income family. In my classroom, students express themselves through movement while preparing for performances. These performances bring our community together and highlight our students' hard work in the performing arts. This is essential during a time when our city is filled with violence. Our students need the fine arts. Dance gives them that chance to be creative and express how they feel.

My Project

At our school, students love to perform and showcase their many talents. Over the years we have put on a variety of assemblies and performances. This year we would like to challenge our students and staff to present a musical to our school community. We have always wanted to perform a musical but due to limited resources and budget concerns in the performing arts department, we have always had to postpone to a later time. Musicals are very expensive when you factor in the licensing to music, stage props and costumes. However, as our performing arts department has grown over the years, we have found a way to keep our budget for costumes and props to a minimum. Therefore, we need help to purchase the licensing rights to use the music, scripts, piano score sheets and choreography DVD.

This project will afford our students the resources needed to make their dream of performing a musical come true.

This will provide not only our students the opportunity to perform a musical but it will give our school community the chance to see a Broadway musical through their own children. This is a great experience for our community because there are not many opportunities to view performances in the Arts or a Broadway musical. This project will help us bring Broadway to our school community and make it a truly meaningful experience for all.
