Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a high school, special ed class in a 112-year-old high school that services those with low-income and Title I needs. Our class consists of incredible students with a wide range of abilities from autism to speech language impairments and cognitive delays.

Caring, enthusiastic, energetic, and curious are just a few words that describe my incredible students.

Every day is a new adventure when we enter our doors. We have quite an assortment of interests and skills and we like to see how many different ways we can incorporate them into our daily lives.

My Project

Covid has obviously changed our world. My students would like to help change it for the better. Many of my students, mostly boys, have had to stay indoors for far too long and have now opted to play video games rather than get up and move. Their mental health, as well as their physical health, is being challenged. Many are feeling unmotivated, frustrated, and desolate. I would like to be able to help them make changes for the better.

According to an article by Sharma & Madaan, "Exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function.

Exercise has also been found to alleviate symptoms such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal." All areas my students struggled with even pre-pandemic days.

Pedometers would help encourage everyone to be more active. They would allow for us to have new challenges. Who can get the most steps in class? Who can move more than the previous hour? The most in a day, a week, etc.? We can talk about personal challenges and how to overcome them. These pedometers would provide some incentive to walk - the first step needed to get us moving toward better emotional, social, and physical health!
