This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my school are very diverse. I have students that have grown up all over the country and I have other students that have never left our state. Students speak multiple languages at home, and some students are still learning English.

One thing all of my students have in common is that their high school diploma will open doors to the future - doors that may not have been available to their parents and grandparents.

One of the biggest hurdles for students is the fact that Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and a 4th year of math, are requirements for graduation.

Our students are kind citizens. Instead of a senior prank, our senior class participates in 'Prank it Forward,' where they pay it forward and raise money for a community member in need. Whether it's a fellow classmate battling cancer, an elementary school student with an undiagnosed medical ailment, or a family that has experienced a tragedy, our students believe in kindness and inclusion. These are the role models that my freshmen look up to, and as they get their turn as seniors, those are the shoes they have to fill.

My Project

For many students, math is intimidating. Working a problem out in isolation, in a notebook, will cause many of students quite a bit of frustration and they will doubt themselves more times than I care to count. When I ask students to do the same problem on a white board (either independently at their desk or as as collaborative group on the larger white boards), I watch my students immediately become more willing to take risks - they will try something - anything, even if it's wrong. They see their mistake (or accept the constructive criticism of a peer), quickly wipe the mistake away with an eraser (or even their sleeve!), and go back and fix the error(s). I see friendly competition blossom between classmates, and students are much more engaged. Let's be honest - there's sometimes that algebra is just boring. We have to get the concepts down before we can apply them to real-life tasks.

But when you are working on a white board and working with your peers, it's not boring or intimidating!

Having Expo markers available for my students will allow them to use white boards more frequently and also allow me, as the teacher, to utilize the Expo markers more freely to color code and highly important information as we are working notes and problems together.

As students transition each day from white board practice to pencil/paper assignments, they need to turn their work in. A new stapler is needed to allow students to staple work quickly and move onto their next task without waiting for 30+ other students to staple their assignment!
