My Students

We are prolific painters! Our students have been using donated paint to create amazing artwork this fall. After only 2 months of school, our classroom is already becoming filled with works in progress. Nearly 400 students visit the art room twice weekly, and we are running out of work space.

Our school is a neighborhood school in an urban area, and many of our children come from immigrant and refugee families, speaking many different languages.

They range from Pre-K students through 7th grade. Art class is a valuable time for this diverse group to express themselves, free of the language barrier, and it gives them a chance to tell their quite unique stories through drawing, painting, sculpting and building. We have 29 students in our classes, and sometimes 7 classes per day! Most of our supplies have come from donations because our budget encountered severe cuts this year. Our students love art class, our program is showing growth and success, and we need to continue our efforts to support these young artists as they work hard to learn and grow.

My Project

Our students' most urgent need is a drying rack for their artwork. We have been working hard, and our success can be seen in the piles of paintings and drawings around our classroom. Sometimes we have 29 students working at 5 tables, with the floor around their tables covered in paintings from the previous classes. With an organized area for these wet works in progress, we could free up valuable work space and create a more serene and less cluttered creative environment for our young artists. These furniture items are expensive and are hard to come by unless purchased in an art store.

Any donation to our program is important because we rely on outside help to keep our program strong.

Economic struggles have affected our schools in many ways, and the arts always suffer. If you could see how excited our students are to come to art class and to have the chance to draw and paint, you would be eager to help them. There are so many talented young people who need to have the chance to realize their potential in the arts, and we should all try to encourage them.
