Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and travel a distance to attend our school. Nearly all of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch and all receive free breakfast. Our school is not a neighborhood school and students must apply to attend. However, we accept all students who meet the minimum requirements, which are conduct and attendance in middle school.
We are a wall to wall academy high school with five academies.
The Health Academy students are able to job shadow at neighboring health facilities while attending our school.
Students are able to graduate high school and earn an entry-level workplace certificate in a specific field of interest.
My Project
Our school is located in an industrial area next to an airport. We do not have the availability to have a lot of land to see nature. We would like to have a butterfly garden that will expose our students to the complexity and beauty of nature. At the present time, we have a vegetable garden. This has been very well received by our community. However, we want to create a serene atmosphere where students can sit and enjoy nature within a butterfly garden.
Students will have the opportunity to sit on benches under trees and hopefully become less stressed with the growing of painted lady butterflies.
When the butterflies hatch toward the end of the school year, it will be a stressful time for students. This area will give a nice retreat for students to learn about butterflies and the life cycle of the larvae into a butterfly. Butterflies have proven to provide relief from problems that our students face every day.
