My Students

Reed High School is located in the Reno/Sparks community. My students’ backgrounds are diverse economically and culturally as reflected across the school which has a 55% minority population. My classes comprise students in all grade levels except sophomores learning Biology, Environmental and AP Environmental Science. Most of my students live in rental homes or apartments which do not have space for personal gardens. Many of my students have never had a chance to grow plants or vegetables or to experience the process of sustaining their own gardens.

There is something magical about giving students the opportunity to plant their own seeds and watch students care and nurture their plants.

Students learn more than science from growing their own plants; they learn life skills that prepare them for adulthood along with gaining a sense of pride and ownership from the experience as well. In addition, due to COVID restrictions, my students had limited lab opportunities in the classroom last year. I feel that it is paramount that students are given more hands-on opportunities when learning botany and agriculture this year to reengage with learning experiences in school. These experiences create real-world connections between the classroom content and their daily lives.

My Project

Our community is a mixture of suburban and urban areas with agriculture and green spaces mixed in. As the local agriculture is privately owned, and the local urban green spaces are maintained by the city, this limits the access and opportunities for community learning my students have to experience this content in a relevant way. My students will benefit from interactive activities that teach them about green spaces, gardening, agriculture, and photosynthesis.

This project gives my students an opportunity to grow their own plants, develop lifelong skills, and develop a deeper understanding of the components of food production and photosynthesis.

The items requested will allow my students to work with hydroponic systems, nutrients, and LED lights grow their own plants in the classroom during any time of year. The seed packets give the students a variety of fruits and vegetables to grow from seedlings. The sprouting trays allow the students to start the seedlings before they transfer them to the hydroponic system since the seeds can’t be placed until they’ve started to sprout. This process deepens the students' understanding of how organisms obtain energy from the environment and what components are necessary for successful food production.

Although we learn this content every year, last year due to COVID restrictions, our students were unable to participate in hands-on experiments. I want to give my students the chance to engage in more lab experiences this year and the opportunity to work as a team. This project will get students engaged in the unit content and give them ownership in their learning in the classroom.
