Help me give my students a praying mantis kit, tadpole to frog kit, live ant farm, ladybug larvae, caterpillars, and supplemental books to create hands-on learning experiences in science.
I teach 30 low-income five-year-old kindergartners. All of the students who attend my school receive free breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. The students I work with are exposed to extreme amounts of violence, and several have families who are unable to support them financially.
My students lack the materials they need to be successful in the classroom, especially with our school district's tight budget.
Though a majority of students come to school without supplies and materials, they come to school eager to learn. I spend a large amount of time planning instruction to meet each of their individual needs. My students appreciate every donation our classroom receives and everything that comes into our classroom is utilized to its fullest potential. The donations we receive make a huge, positive impact on their education.
My Project
My students love science and learning about the world around them! Kindergarten students learn best when they engage in hands-on learning.
Our life cycle and growth unit would be more engaging and interactive with LIVE ladybugs, ants, caterpillars, tadpoles, and a praying mantis growing kit.
Having live insects and tadpoles would allow students to make scientific observations, identify characteristics of living things, and learn about changes they go through as they grow. Students often have a difficult time understanding the concept of life cycles but with live creatures, they would see changes as they occur.
My students have taken a strong interest in reading non-fiction texts. However due to a lack of funding, they often do not receive the real-life experiences they need to expand their learning. The books requested would provide students with information about the insects and tadpoles we have in our classroom. The live growing kits would take our science unit to the next level! My students greatly appreciate every donation we receive. Thank you for making a difference in their academic growth and fostering their love for learning!
