My Students

I teach in a local charter school in Bluffdale, Utah. Our community is small but fierce. When our teachers and students set their minds to accomplish a goal.... look out! A mere 4 years ago our school was considered underperforming. As a learning community we came together to turn things around. We implemented small LA and math intervention groups for every student four days a week. These small, flexible groups turned the course for our students. Then, just as we were on an upswing, Covid hit. Our groups fell apart as learning went online and the most needy of students lost some of the ground we fought so hard to gain. Now that we are learning in person again, we are back on track, and I'm glad to report that our students are thriving. Not only have they made up lost ground, but have surpassed it. My goal is to use this momentum we currently have going to take my students to the next level!

My Project

Individual whiteboards are an integral part of learning in my classroom. The second my students walk into the classroom, they pull out their whiteboard to start the day's warm-up. As a teacher, being able to watch every student complete 10-15 problems daily is invaluable. I can quickly address any misconceptions, as well as catch mistakes as they happen. When you see the mistakes happen in real time (versus at home doing homework), you can instantly re-direct students by reviewing their work together. It also opens the door to have a one-on-one discussion with the student, where individualized learning can take place. Lastly, students have expressed that getting instant feedback on their work helps them tremendously. They have reported, "Now I'm more confident that I know what I'm doing."
