Teacher Professional Development: I need an iPad mini and case to video critique my teaching and questioning techniques as I implement math workshop in my classroom.<profdevpilot>
"Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful."
Margaret J. Wheatley
It is only through reflection that we become more aware of our teaching methods and improve upon them.
I am entering my 19th year of teaching this fall.
I taught fifth grade for 14 years before switching to fourth grade five years ago. I am a veteran teacher, who loves teaching, yet I know there is always room for improvement. I am always striving to be the BEST!
My Project
I am requesting an iPad mini and case to video record myself as I am conducting my small groups in math workshop (which will center around the book requested) and readers workshop. I hope to video record myself, and then analyze my delivery and question strategies in order to improve upon them. I know questioning is one of my weaker areas, especially in the area of math. I want to ask meaningful questions, and offers reasonable wait time for my students to think and answer critically. The idea of video recording my lessons for the purpose of improving my methods was obtained after reading some findings reported from the "Best Foot Forward Project. "Best Foot Forward" is a project which was piloted in 100 classrooms in New York City, Georgia, and North Carolina, and it examines whether digital video can improve teaching practice and student outcomes. I think it makes total sense and with true reflection after a lesson or session, a teacher can gain valuable knowledge for her class.
I feel by analyzing my own teaching strategies, and reassessing my methods, my students will benefit tremendously!
Improving and strengthening my questioning strategies will help make the students think more critically, and in turn, perform better on standards they are asked to master. I am excited about the possibility of being able to do this because it will not only impact my students this year, but for years to come. I always strive to do better and be the best teacher for my students.
