My Students
My students are supposed to be immersed in a classroom rich in the Cantonese language, but how can they be immersed in a foreign language environment with just one teacher in the classroom speaking the language?
My school is populated with approx.
300 children. My classroom has a mixture of one-third non-English speakers, one third bilingual students, and one-third non Chinese speakers. 60% of them are on free and reduced lunch. Due to the budget cuts throughout the years, our classroom resources are only available when purchased by ourselves. I believe that to be an effective teacher, I need to invest in my job and provide the necessity to make myself an effective teacher. But one can only invest so much with a mediocre salary and a mortgage and children of my own to raise on my own.
My Project
The portable DVD players will be used during center time and after children finish assignments and projects early. My goal is to provide as many opportunities for the children to hear the language and be motivated to continue learning. Currently I have a few electronic devices that plays Cantonese DVDs, music, stories, and games. I am hoping to requisite more electronic devices so that more children can be immersed in the language and have fun doing so.
It is challenging enough teaching a foreign language but teaching an immersion class is more than challenging.
Children in an immersion setting really needs all the opportunities they can get to hear and watch visuals to help them learn the language. With the portable DVD players, children in my immersion class can have a true immersed environment.
