This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever planted a garden of your own? Do you remember planting seeds and waiting with anxious anticipation for the seedlings to grow? Do you remember how exciting it is when the first little green shoots poke out of the earth? I want to give my kindergarten students that same experience! I teach a diverse group of 18 kindergarten students in a high-needs school. Many of my students live in apartments and don't have a yard where they can plant a garden. Many of them haven't experienced the excitement that comes from growing things from seeds. As Spring approaches, we will begin a life science unit about plants. One of our main science standards in kindergarten is to learn about the different parts of plants. To facilitate this learning, I am requesting mini greenhouses that my students can use to grow seeds in our classroom window. By growing seeds, my students will be able to observe each part of the plant as it grows, beginning with the roots and the tiny green sprout. With the plant learning center kit, students can build and label the parts of a plant, using the knowledge they have gained by watching their own plants grow. One of our other main standards is learning to observe the world by using the five senses. The other resources I have requested are a plant learning center kit, a plant lab and a plant and flower pocket chart kit. These materials will give my students more hands-on opportunities to observe the growth of plants using their five senses. These materials will also help my students learn some other important facts about plants, including the life cycle of plants and the various needs of plants, such as light, air and water. You can help plant seeds of knowledge! With your support, my students will receive a strong foundation in life sciences. Students love hands-on science, and your help will give my students a chance to observe the wonders of life as their seeds turn into tiny sprouts and eventually big plants! Thank you.
