My Students

This school year, I have the privilege to educate 15 wonderful second graders. We are at a school located in the West Pullman area, which is on the far south side of Chicago. My classroom is composed of 100% African American students who come from low income homes. I am sure they are faced with many life challenges but their academic life should not be one of them. 13% of the students in the school are proficient readers and 93% of my students are reading below the second grade level. I believe that all children should be given equity in education. It is a challenge to provide these equal opportunities when unfortunately every school is not funded equally. I'm motivated to bring enriching experiences to my little ones especially when every morning I am greeted by their smiles and the eagerness for knowledge they display.

My Project

As a teacher, there are three parts in teaching a lesson. The first part, the teacher models the expected outcome. During the modeling, the teacher often times writes down steps to be followed or thier thought processes. In my classroom we begin the literacy block by having the students sit on a classroom reading carpet. At that time, I read a book out loud while modeling various reading strategies. While the teacher is modeling, the students are watching and learning. By having a dry erase easel at the carpet during the literacy read aloud, I would be able to display the reading strategy we are working on as well as an explanation of how the strategy should be utilized when they are independently reading. Most children at the second grade level are visual learners. With my students currently reading below the second grade level, having a colorful dry erase easel will only enhance their learning experience. Not only will they be able to see and read colorful words, the visual images of the strategies they need to help push their reading levels will be embedded in their minds as they practice reading.
