My students need to make fertilizer to keep our 'Native Species" Pollinator garden alive and thriving. We need tote bins and a screen to make our own "worm bins".
"Unless someone like YOU, cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, its not."~ The Lorax (Dr. Seuss)
The elementary students at my school love nature and the world around them.
They are drawn to study living plants and creatures, and genuinely want to help the planet. We have embraced the idea of, "think globally, act locally." We are about to construct and plant a "Native Species Pollinator Garden", but our sandy soil (resulting from recent construction) could really use a nutrient boost.
My Project
My students are looking for a way to recycle their classroom's paper and lunchroom waste. I am looking for a way to give my students an authentic way to explore decomposition, soil production, and the foundation of our local ecosystem. What better way to accomplish our goals than with classroom worm bins?
Through this project, my students will be able to make their own mini worm farms using tote bins and a screen. The children will then be able to save some of their daily waste products (paper scraps, fresh fruit and veggie remains from their lunches) from going into a landfill. As a bonus, they will be able to touch worms every few days, add natural fertilizer to their pollinator garden plants, and spray "worm tea" on any veggie plants that might be plagued by fungus.
All students need to get outdoors more often, get dirty, investigate butterflies and worms, and fall in love with their world.
It is my hope that, above all, my students will enhance their interest in, and knowledge of, the balance of nature. We can all make this world a better place, if we are able to teach children that man's relationship to nature can focus on conserving rather than consuming resources.
