Waste Not, Want Not: Help us Save Paint with Lidded Pallets

My students need 25 covered palettes in order to help save paint from day to day instead of wasting it.

My Students

"Waste not want not" is a rule we live by in my classroom. Help us conserve our already small resources as we try to keep paint from day to day instead of sending all that beautiful color down the drain.

My students are mostly farm kids from Southern Idaho.

They are driven and know the meaning of hard work. Many of them are from families with serious financial hardships and have never been able to afford art supplies at home. For a majority of my students, the only time they will ever be able to paint is in my art class. Our school is a rural K-12 school with an emphasis on creating patriotic and active leaders. Character education is important to us and we actively reinforce the ideals presented by our Founding Fathers.

My Project

One of my favorite mediums to introduce my students to is acrylic paint. Unfortunately, acrylics dry lightning fast. As of right now, we are using unused meat trays for paint palettes. At the end of the day we cover the trays with plastic wrap, but it doesn't seal very well and the paint always ends of drying out and going to waste. Recently we learned about Georges Seurat and pointillism. We created an enormous patriotic mural for our school using only Q-tips and acrylic paint. Sadly, each day, my students had to start mixing their colors all over again since they hadn't been able to save their paint from the day before. It was a huge hassle for my students and an even bigger waste of paint. We are planning another mural for next year and I can't wait to see it. I do however want to avoid another wasteful situation. I have requested twenty-five covered palettes in order to help save paint from day to day instead of wasting it.

Our school's charter includes a dress code, and that means that my students wear polo shirts and dress slacks to school every day.

While our dress code has significantly reduced bullying and behavior issues, it also makes it difficult for my students to express their budding creativity. Their outlet is my art class and they use the resources I give them to the fullest. I want to help ensure that the limited supplies I have will be around for future students. Please help me. Help my students. Thank You!
