Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every year, my biology students grow food hydroponically in our classroom as part of the photosynthesis/respiration and subsequently the ecology unit. I also have tons of students who bring their own lunch, much of which ends up in the trash- especially organic food waste. For years, I really wished we used this opportunity to teach about composting, food decomposition, soil quality, the nutrient cycle and most obvious food cycling.

Thanks to your generous support, well, we now can- with two composter devices that we can use to do just that- plus use them to look at the process and compare the two- my ultimate goal being a project that involves students making their owb low-tech composters and compare to the techy ones.

With these two food cyclers, in addition to teaching soil science and food cycling, we can inspire a generation of students to invest and buy (or make) one of these for their own kitchens and reduce their carbon footprint.
