Waste-Free Lunches: A Hands-On Environmental Project

My highly capable fourth and fifth grade students are natural leaders and love the environment. We've been working all year on turning our school into a green school. They pick up the school's recycling every week, conducted a waste audit, taught lessons in each classroom and started two worm bins. Our Halloween was even a green event!

My students now want to reduce the waste in our school lunchroom. This has never been done before and they are excited about making a difference.

They will need three heavy recycling bins on wheels. Each day at lunch the students will be responsible for helping their classmates recycle their waste into the three containers: paper, aluminum and plastic.

I believe that this will not only teach the entire school about how to recycle but it will also develop environmental leaders in my classroom.
