This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in the Computer Lab at our elementary school serving grades Kindergarten through 8th. We would like to expand our middle school curriculum using the Lego Mindstorm Robotic kits to increase our computer, science, and engineering skills.
We are a Chicago Public School primarily made up of Hispanic Students in grades K through 8th.
We are about 86% low income students, including 10% English language learners, and 12% diverse learners. They enjoy coming into the Computer Lab and learning about new technologies, particularly the hands-on activities. They like collaborating with each other on projects, complimenting each others strengths and weaknesses. They take pride in their achievements after completing a project.
My Project
I envision this resource as the next step for our middle school age students. The younger students now use Lego We Do Robotics which they love. I need to add to my curriculum so that I can take students to the next level of computer, science, problem solving, and engineering skills. Using the more complicated Mindstorm kit to build robots, they will expand their knowledge and use more collaboration to solve a problem. They will be able to observe cause and effect in the movement of their robots. They will learn how to make modifications to change the results.
Donations to our project will help our students see the possibilities of careers in technology and computer science.
It will help to keep our curriculum more consistent. Students will be exposed to subjects that they we would not normally have access to. Students will gain knowledge about technology and how technology can be used to solve problems in the real world. Creativity and collaboration skills will be increased.
