My students need several supplemental books about the history of Washington, DC, children's books on Washington, DC, a binding machine to create their own A to Z book on their city, and a utility cart to easily transport the materials between classrooms.
I teach 10th grade DC History in a public charter high school in Washington, DC. 100% of the students are African American and 95% of my students come from Wards 7 and 8, one of the areas most plagued by crime and poverty in the District. The resources available to the students in surrounding areas are not afforded to my students--resources that many of us take for granted.
Our school has a class set of DC History textbooks, but unfortunately the textbooks are written on a college level. Because the vast majority of my students are grade levels behind their peers, I can only use excerpts from this textbook in the classroom. I must think of innovative ways to get the information to my students while allowing them plenty of opportunity to practice their literacy skills.
This year, I'd like to provide my students with more interesting and engaging reading material about the history of Washington, DC and allow them time to do creative projects involving their city's history. As a culminating project, I would like them to create a "Washington DC from A to Z" children's book to share with the community. This book would allow my students to incorporate everything they have learned throughout the course into one book they can share with others.
My students really enjoy hands-on projects and sharing their knowledge with others, and this book would combine both of these interests. This would be a great way to get them excited about the history of the nation's capital.
The supplemental reading material will provide them with more engaging literature about DC. Literacy skills are always my number one priority in the class as this will prepare them for college. The children's books on the A to Z of Washington, DC will be wonderful examples to show my students when they start creating their own books. The binding machine will give the books a professional touch after they've worked so hard putting it together. Finally, a utility cart will be essential to transport all of these books and supplies because I teach DC History in three different classrooms on different floors.
Your donation will significantly impact my ability to teach a more engaging DC History course. The students will be able to read more excerpts about the rich history of the nation's capital, look at wonderful examples of children's books before they create their own Washington, DC from A to Z books, and actually bind their book together with the use of a machine. Please help make this dream a reality in my classroom. My students will be so excited to create a work they can share with others.
