Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th thru 8th and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander. 25% of our students are currently an English Language Learner. We have 10% of our population receiving services from our Special Education department. We have students coming from all over the district including many who are also English language learners.

Our students come from a variety of cultures and socio-economic levels which means that many students have trouble getting access to certain things.

This means that many of our students have trouble gaining access to certain necessary items.

My Project

Help my students have the confidence of clean laundry. For many of our students, they have trouble getting their clothes clean. This is an issue because they don't have regular access to laundry facilities. This can mean that students are coming to school in unclean clothing which can cause distraction from learning because students are uncomfortable in there clothing. This can lead to peer bullying because of body odor or stains. This can make students feel uncomfortable coming to school which can lead to more absences. This leads to an attendance issue which can hurt their overall grades and future matriculation.

PE clothing is a huge part of the PE grading system can make a difference in certain students GPA.

Many students struggle keeping there PE clothing clean which can lead to them choosing to not changes or "dress-out." This can hurt their grade and future the laundry issue as they are now sweating in there other school clothing. Having a washer/ dryer combo available to help wash students clothing for school and their PE uniforms will hopefully students feeling welcome and able in the school.
