it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a vibrant Special Education High School community with students having individual and special needs. Staff members greet "our kids" at their school buses and high five them, smile or give them a shout out by name. It is so very important for each member of our school community to feel included as they are not always embraced in their communities. Students from 12 years to 21 year and their families live in the Heart of Harlem New York or surrounding neighborhoods. Over half of the student population are English as New Learners (ENLs) which translates into families who are not English dominant. When families are not able to advocate for themselves due to language barriers their children may not have their needs met.
Our population encompasses students with severe multiple disabilities which include; vision/hearing loss, loss of mobility, autism, emotional/ intellectual disabilities.
Many families don't have the resources to acquire the basic needs for their children to succeed. This issue is as basic as clean clothes and items of hygiene. Obtaining eyeglasses is considered a luxury item. Many children with visual and sensory needs who would benefit from prescription eyeglasses do not have access to Optometrists.
My Project
Visitors to our school community always comment on the warmth and family atmosphere in our school building. When you work on a daily basis with multiply-handicapped students you expand your heart and mind. You want them to have all the opportunities available to them and look for ways to expand the circumstances to provide their needs.
The occasion of implementing a vision screening program with optometrists within our school building is tremendous for our kids.
As teenagers our students have self esteem issues and want to have the nicest clothes, best hair style and eyeglasses that are fashionable and fit their vision needs. Some students share eyeglasses with other family members, or have store-bought pairs that do not meet their vision needs. Other times the students do not want to wear their eyeglasses because they feel less attractive. Having a high quality frame, specifically suited to the student would enhance their self image and increase their every day wearing.
