This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the Special Education Department Chairperson, I have had a first-hand glimpse into the academic and social-emotional struggles that teens with disabilities endure. In a pre-pandemic world, my students were fighting against odds to attend school on a regular basis. Many are working well below grade level because of learning disabilities. Their socio-economic standings limit them from attaining the basic necessities. With the addition of a disability and a pandemic, my students with disabilities and their families have hit the highest levels of exhaustion, frustration, and many are nearing the point of giving up. Our teachers are great. They are doing their best to make daily phone calls and Zoom sessions with our students. They are working well beyond the scope of practice to help these young ladies and gentlemen succeed but that they really need is more equitable access to digital resources. Our students could greatly benefit from having basic necessities such as warm weather clothing and simple technology for their educational needs.

My Project

My school is a Title 1 school where over 90% of students receive free lunches. Their families work hard to provide as much as they can but they pandemic has caused additional hardships.

Just to make ends meet, many of my seniors work part time while attending school full time.

My students live in New York City and do not own cars. They rely heavily on public transportation and walking to get to and from. Warm weather essentials such as winter hats would be much appreciated by my school community.
