Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a blended community whose backgrounds consist of immigrants, special needs, and bilingualism all in a general education English classroom! Many of my students are first and second generation immigrants whose families struggle financially and culturally. Many of my students' parents first priorities are financial need, so school, unfortunately, becomes less important and more of a struggle.
My students have life problems such as helping pay bills, coping with domestic violence, and learning to navigate life without the help and support of an idealistic home life.
Life can be overwhelming for my students, so I like to provide structure and routine so they know what they are getting when they come into my class.
I strive to expose my students to the nostalgic high school English topics via novels, like Lord of the Flies and To Kill a Mockingbird, and short stories such as Lamb to the Slaughter. Project-based learning becomes an exciting part of the English class compared to the tedious practice of rote reading.
My Project
Students look at the bulletin boards in the hallways and in the classroom, so why not upgrade my die-cut letters to include a variety of textures and fonts by using the Cricut to customize for my students!? Our school is returning to 100% in-person instruction in the fall, so I want to create a warm welcome for my students, some of whom are going to be in their 2nd year of enrollment, who have never stepped on campus.
The Cricut cutting machine will help me cut out letters to create unique captions for my bulletin boards (think our unit's title or students' names) that will call out attention to detail and show them I see them!
I have 4-full size bulletin boards total that I decorate with colorful fabric and interactive activities (like pull-off tabs of pun phrases or a fold-over "Shakespeare or Tupac" quote that makes students read the captions), so the Cricut will help expedite the lettering portion of the boards.
In addition, students will have the ability to use the Cricut, along with other resources so generously obtained from DonorsChoose.org, to create unique letters and shapes for projects they work on in class.
