Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are as diverse as New York City in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and ability. Our school demographics are sixty-two percent Hispanic, twenty-eight percent black, five percent Asian and three percent white, with over 85% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.

I have students who come to school with so little and students come to school without breakfast and without backpacks.

Some students cannot live at home with their parents and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges including mental health issues, gun violence, and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all with the educational opportunities they deserve.

My Project

Our AP students have been through so much this year. They had a late start to Covid-19 push backs, and then 2 back to back quarantine periods, which had the whole group starting the year significantly behind. Then they had to adapt to what in person learning was like after being remote for over 18 months. So many of the exciting and engaging activities that make AP Environmental Science special had to be dropped due to safety protocols and social distancing, which meant dropping field trips and some in person labs and activities. They had to learn how to manage more work on their own, and deal with added stresses on top of AP coursework and the more rigorous demands that in school learning is placing on their shoulders, such as college, family, and outside jobs,

We want to bring some joy and energy to our AP Environmental Science students by bringing them class sweatshirts to keep them both warm and connected this year.

It has been very hard to find ways to remind my AP students of how school used to be, as they are still transitioning back from the remote education landscape. It's my hope that by providing them with something tangible, they can feel connected to one another and to the school. As they see one another in the halls once more, they will be able to connect with one another and start building those in person relationships. By celebrating them, and all they have done so far, we hope to raise spirits and community within my AP class.
