This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

My school is 98% free and reduced lunch. We get many donations of hats, gloves, and other items for our students. We even received a donation of winter coats for every student in the school 3 years ago. We have a food pantry once a month for students and their families, as well as community members. One thing that we lack is donations of socks.

This week wind chills have been between 7 and 15 degrees, and children are walking into school with no socks on their feet.

This is Wisconsin. It is only going to get colder. We have days in January where it's too cold for school because it is unsafe for our students to wait on the corner for the bus as temperatures dip to well below zero, and wind chills reach the point of causing frostbite within 2 minutes of skin exposure.

I can't clothe them all, no matter how hard I try. But every child deserves a pair of warm socks to keep their ankles warm in these frigid Wisconsin winters.
