My Students

I am a teacher at a Title I school where 90% of my students live in low-income households. Our school was shut down in March of 2020, and since then, the community has worked tirelessly to provide adequate virtual education for all learners. Although students are still able to receive the free daily meals that they are used to receiving in school, there are new and unexpected challenges being faced. Many of my students lack the supplies necessary to make their at-home learning environment meaningful and adequate. Learning through a screen can be extremely challenging, for both students and educators.

Even while facing all of these challenges, the 28 fourth graders at my school work extremely hard during virtual learning; they deserve nothing less than the best experiences and materials!

The encouragement, positivity, and collaboration of our students continues to amaze me every day. Despite all the uncertainty of this year and the amount of learning they have missed out on due to the pandemic, they continue to persevere and make learning so meaningful! They deserve to be afforded all of the opportunities that they would have in a brick and mortar setting.

My Project

Virtual learning has been tough on students and teachers everywhere. Many of my students rely on school to provide not only socialization, but a warm place with food and supplies like extra hats, gloves, scarves, and snacks when needed. It is crucial in what can feel like a long, dark winter to provide them with motivation to keep going.

My students need kits to help them stay warm and avoid hunger, while also giving them a shout-out for their hard academic work daily during virtual learning.

The human requirements of food, liquid, shelter, warmth, and sleep don't just go away or become invisible behind a computer screen. Students need support during this time to stay warm, full, and focused on learning.

The reusable bags will hold the gloves, scarves, beanies, and snacks for students. The snacks - granola bars, fruit snacks, Goldfish, Frito-Lay Ultimate Snack Care Package, and cookies/crackers assortment - are some classic favorites that will provide nourishment while also being exciting for students!

I miss my students so incredibly much right now! It would provide me with so much joy to (safely) drop these care packages off to them. Not only would this be a fun way to celebrate their hard academic work and growth right now, it would also provide them and their families with some much needed relief, warmth, and nourishment.
