This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Welcome to 5th grade in a low income area where the common core demands not only taxes our brains but our budget! Our biggest challenge this year is writing. We need a writing center to hold all our materials as well as basic materials like red pens, highlighters, paper, and post-its.

My NYC public school students live in a neighborhood which contains NYC's largest low income housing community.

In their day-to-day lives, some can see a lot of ugliness, and the majority of them find school a safe way to escape that. As their teacher, I recognize my students as smart, creative individuals who have the potential to shatter the "kid from the projects" stereotype and to move on and develop into well-educated productive members of society.

My Project

In our 5th grade classroom we have plenty of ideas, but not a lot of materials. Good writers are able to brainstorm, draft, edit/revise, and publish. Currently in our classroom, we are forced to act as good writers in a traditional matter only with the support of basic materials supplied by school. The materials we requested will allow us to participate in many learning activities to engage all levels of learners in a variety of ways. We will be using the writing center to hold the materials we need. We also need red pens for editing our own work, highlighters to highlight key points and ideas, yellow lined paper to show the world the difference between a published piece and a draft as well as post-its so we can leave feedback on our peer's work.

Funding for this project would make a dramatic difference in my student's academic lives.

The materials requested would allow ALL students to be successful in writing. It would allow for a less traditional way of teaching writing which would increase NYS Assessment scores. More importantly, these items would allow my students the experience to actually be an author. Who knows... Maybe I teach a future Newbery award winner!
