My Students
My ESOL students need a lot of support in vocabulary building and basic reading and writing activities. At the end of the year, I want them to be able to show progress in their language proficiency. If we have the technology that we need, learning would be more accessible and engaging for them.
Although most of my students speak Spanish at home, I have a few that speak Chinese, Bengali, Krio, and Ibo.
They bring to the classroom the richness of their language and culture, which is what makes my teaching really interesting. A few of them have just arrived from their home countries so they do not speak any English at all. Their period of adjustment and assimilation comes at different phases, and it really takes a concerted effort to let them learn the language. We are a Title 1 targeted school with a diverse student and staff population. Almost all of my ESOL students qualify for free and reduced meals.
My Project
Since most of my students do not have the resources at home, it is just fitting that they have equal access to technology when they are in the ESOL classroom. I plan to use the LCD projector for instructional purposes and whenever we have online interactive reading and vocabulary and phonics games.
As of now, I am using my school-issued computer and my personal iPad so that we can have digital resources in the classroom. With this LCD projector, it will be easier to use Powerpoint lessons and digital tools to supplement their learning.
Your donations to make this project a reality will ensure that my ESOL students have equal access to technology in the classroom, and will enable learning to be more accessible, meaningful, and engaging as they try to become proficient English language speakers, writers, and readers.
With exposure to technology, they can also become ready for 21st century jobs.
