Help me give my students diverse books for our classroom library that will allow us to read about characters from different backgrounds to see the world through someone else's eyes.
My students are fantastic learners who walk through our doors from all walks of life. We are a rural school nestled in the Smoky Mountains. Many of our students never leave the county or state, so it is our job to educate them on the world around them.
My students are creative, kindhearted, and very driven when it comes to learning new things.
Our school has about 800 students in grades 6-8. I teach around 110 of these students. We have a growing classroom library that is full of wonderful books that my students enjoy reading, but we want to expand that library to include diverse books. When trying to expose my students to a variety of people other than those that are like them, books act as a great vehicle to teach them.
Through diverse novels by authors from different backgrounds featuring characters that are different than them, my students can learn about the world around them.
My Project
When some of your students have rarely left the county they live in and don't know many people other than people like them, how can you educate them about diversity? The answer: books!
Having a classroom library full of diverse books written from diverse authors about characters who are different than my students will not only engage them in a captivating story, but it can educate them about diversity.
Reading is a great vehicle for students to "walk in someone else's shoes" and being able to do that through diverse books can really impact their lives. Having books available that feature characters from different time periods, races, and cultures will really help expand their worldview.
