This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of a large urban 9-12 secondary school in California. I work with students from every point on the spectrum... I have students who love reading, hanging out at the library, engaging in their world, thinking critically, imagining, creating, and learning. I also have students who have not quite discovered the magic of reading yet. It is my hope that by purchasing some contemporary popular fiction and compelling non fiction, I will inspire even more students to visit the library. It is also my hope that students who are already fans of the library will be in a position to find even more treasures. I hope to help all of my students succeed and transform even the most reluctant of the bunch into a reader!

My Project

Many of my students who groan at the thought of reading just haven't found the right book that inspires them yet. I am hoping to stock my library with contemporary, engaging books that might compel them to adopt a habit of reading. Or at least to finish a single book. It just takes one special reading experience to turn a non-reader around. The challenge is matching that reader with their first book that makes them want to read. I want all my students to leave high school having read at least one book. If they take away with them a willingness to read more, I would be thrilled. But too many students graduate from 12th grade not having read even a single book...at least recreationally. I must provide books that will persuade them not only to pick up a book, but that will sustain their interest if I want to achieve this goal. Won't you help me?!
