My students need a variety of books such as Coat of Many Colors, Chocolate Milk Por Favor, and The Skin You Live In, that teach about diversity and tolerance.

My Students
This year I am teaching two classes of creative and talented second-grade scholars at a Title I school in urban North Carolina. We are a Title I school, meaning all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Even though these students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds they still come to school happy, smiling, bubbly, and ready to learn!
In class, my students are not just kids, they are goal achievers, scientists, leaders, goal-setters, dreamers, readers, and mathematicians.
My students aspire to be policemen, doctors, teachers, firefighters, veterinarians and inventors. They deserve the best education and the best educational supplies to help them be successful second graders so they can make their dreams come true!
My Project
My students need books that will help them learn what it means to be tolerant and understanding of diversity. School is the place where my students come to not only learn to read and do math, but to learn to be good people in the world and to be accepting of others. America is known as the "melting pot" and I want my students to understand how diverse America is and how they can be tolerant of all the different cultures around them. I plan to read Little Blue and Little Yellow and The Skin You Live In first. With these books I plan to enlighten my class on the different races in the world, and even though we may have different skin colors, we are all alike. I will read The Name Jar and Chocolate Milk Por Favor to help students empathize with students new to the country who feel like they might not fit in. We will discuss times they have felt left out and how they can help new students in our class and our school to feel welcomed. The book, Same, Same But Different will teach students that other students around the world live just like them, even if they are thousands of miles away. With these books, students will learn to be more open and tolerant of people who look different from them. My students will be able to know that even though everyone looks different, we really are the same.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
